Stalking a Congo on Hyena Cart

A long while back I wrote about the benefits of being a vendor in a Congo on Hyena Cart. I am happy to say that I have joined The Whimsy Willows and will regularly be stocking in that congo.  As vendors we’re having a great time creating and working together, but it’s come to our attention that some of our buyers are having a tough time navigating. This post is to help you out.

First: What is a congo? Think of a congo like a mall. Each shop is owned and run independently, but they all sell from the same location. In a congo a variety of shops work together and post their items at the same time. The Whimsy Willows stocks on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7pm Eastern. Throughout the month each shop runs it’s own business and works on items for the congo, then they put the listings in the congo.

In order to shop on Hyena Cart you will need an account and be logged in. In the upper left corner is the link to login/register.  You will also need Paypal as it’s the only payment method integrated with the Hyena Cart check out process. It’s best to have these accounts set up in advance as sometimes stockings move quickly while a number of people try to buy the same items. For high demand listings it can be a bit of a race to see who will checkout first. This combat shopping is where we get the term “stalking”.

Prior to the stocking time  items are previewed as shown rather than a “buy now!” button it says when the item will be available for purchase.

Item Preview

In the screenshot above you can see this item will be available at 7:00pm on Thursday July 10 and that is days away from when the screenshot was taken. This info help you to set an alarm if you don’t want to forget. You can also see the shipping options, so you’ll know what it will cost for shipping and if the item can be sent to your location.

buy now

Each item needs to be bought individually. Select the green Buy Now! button to add to cart. If your item has options you will select them at this point too. It’s important to select your shipping option. It defaults to USA domestic. If you decide not to continue your purchase please contact us as it is unavailable for others to purchase once you click “buy now”. Once in your cart you must click the Paypal button to roll over into the payment screen. You will have to log in to your Paypal account to finish the order. Once complete it will not always automatically return you to Hyena Cart, so you will have to navigate back if you would like to shop more.

cart

It’s important to remember that each shop title within the congo is an individual shop and when you purchase you are buying from that small business not the congo itself. Be sure to scroll all the way through the congo, so you don’t miss any wonderful items.

Vendor Names

Some listings are sold as auctions. You enter your bid and hopefully win. If you would like to practice the bidding process there is a Fake Auction available. If you are the winner of an auction, Hyena Cart will send a message to your email on file letting you know. In that email is a link to pay for the auction. If you do not get the email you can make a payment from your account. First select purchases from your account pull down.

purchasesYour auction will show in your purchases. And if you click Pay you will be directed to select shipping and go Paypal to complete payment.

pay

We love our customers and it’s important that we help make your shopping experience smooth and pleasurable, don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Additional Hyena Cart shopping info can be found in the Shopper’s FAQ.

Made of Heart Monday July 7th

This week we’re giving a little shout out to Toni at Little House of Crafting. You might recall seeing some of her cute buttons in our weekly link ups. I love this Makers gotta make button. Perfect for your inner craft addict. We can’t help it we just gotta do it.

Vacation and the Winds of Change

I’m blessed to have amazing grandparents in the lives of my kids and we just returned from a great family vacation. Three weeks of getting to do a lot of things we never would’ve experienced otherwise. The first vacation we’ve had in over 6 years. We were so passed due and getting to do it has been like a reset for my soul.

DSCF1172

I got to unplug and actually relax. I got to reconnect with extended family, my kids, myself. Remember the kind of person I’ve always been inside but managed to lose.  It was nice to step back from the always working, planning, stressing, and just simply play and enjoy the kids. I loved really sitting and observing how much my 14 year old now favors his father. He’s almost the same age as when we met and I wonder what he would think of him now if he hadn’t passed. He’s also turning into quite the golfer. I’m not looking forward to all the green’s fees I see in my future, but it’s nice to see him without his nose in a book or handheld device. Bean has no fear of water and will happily leap from the pool side whether anyone is there to catch him or not. We should harness his swimming enthusiasm somehow.

DSCF1160

We love our country’s history and getting to be in Washington D.C. was an awesome first time experience for us. We’d love to go back and see more. It’s always incredible as a parent to see your kids wonder, explore and take everything in; to be able to share your knowledge and experience while learning along side them. We also got to see the 9-11 Memorial and New World Trade Center. It was extremely powerful to be there and going through the museum was like reliving that point in history. I doubt many leave without tears.

DSCF1296

In addition to traveling and playing tourist with one set of grandparents we were able to spend a week with the in-laws. I can’t even begin to describe how healing it was to mend that branch of our family tree and remember how much they meant to us and see that one person’s failures do not imply a total familial dissection. In a lot of ways for that week I felt at home, like I belonged, like things had never changed. There were awkward moments making nice with estranged friends, knowing they think little of me, but pretending to be kind anyway. Reminded me that I have always been a forgiving person who tries to see the best in people, but somewhere along the way I’ve lost those pieces of me and it’s time to take it back.

Now we prepare to move and with our move there are lots of exciting changes for the shop. I will now have a beautiful new craft studio where all the magic will happen. The next few weeks of chaos and reorganization will be worth it. I have some exciting new ideas on the horizon and can’t wait to share our new plans with you. A fun 30 day challenge, a huge multi vendor scavenger hunt and more as a well rested mama gets back to work. Thank you all for your continued support! Without our fans and customers none of this would be possible.

The Hidden PTSD Message in Frozen

I’ll admit it we were a little late to the Frozen craze. We hadn’t seen it in theaters and waited until the Easter bunny brought it to actually see it. I had seen the various versions of  “Let it Go” and the horrible speculation about the “gay agenda”, but when we actually saw it I was reduced to tears. It’s a moving little tale about the power of sisterhood. Something I know little of as my sisters leave much to be desired. But really resonated with me was how much it felt like loving someone with PTSD/TBI issues. It’s been a while since I’ve talked about that piece of our life, but felt maybe it was time again. Partly because parts of Frozen really resonated with me. I could swear that the writers must have experienced llife with a loved one who suffers from PTSD, maybe they felt inspired by the epidemic that is plaguing families all over the country, or maybe my heart aches and I see comfort in a simple children’s movie.

First little Anna sits outside the locked door “Do you wanna build a snowman?” The pleading of a girl whose lost her best friend. They were close, inseparable and suddenly without explanation or reason there is a wall between them. She desperately pleads and hopes to connect, to understand, to heal and she gets nowhere. Meanwhile on the other side of those doors is Elsa; scared and alone, worried about the damage she could do to the ones she loves and little control over it. She suffers alone in a prison of sorts. Wow, that could be our life. PTSD changes people, you lose your best friend, your partner and in most cases that happens long before you even understand what it is you’re dealing with. Then you fight to help them, but they have already closed themselves off into their minds and shut you out, partly because they’re afraid of hurting you and partly because they just don’t expect you to understand. Conceal don’t feel.

Elsa is a lot like someone suffering from PTSD. She keeps it all bottled up and hides, but then a trigger comes and before she realizes what’s happened she’s lashed out, she’s done the damage, and she has to run away. Then she thinks she’s happier in a place where she can just be herself and not worry about anyone else; her ice castle far away. But Anna shows up and she remembers it hurts and she pushes her away again. Yup, that sounds familiar. Let’s self destruct rather than work it out for someone we love.

But we love them anyway. We learn to brace for impact and remind ourselves it’s not us. We sometimes push too hard and get hurt in the process. Enter the Fixer Upper song the little trolls sing all about loving people in spite of their “flaws”. That we all need a little love, but especially these words:

We’re only saying that love’s a force that’s powerful and strange
People make bad choices if they’re mad or scared or stressed
But throw a little love their way, and you’ll bring out their best”

I’m a big fan of kill with kindness. It usually makes man I married super sensitive and like he doesn’t deserve us, but at his worst I have to remember to be my best. Not that it’s easy, after all I’m not a saint. But usually when he makes his worst choices, when he acts out in ways I don’t understand I remember that love is a choice and choosing to love makes a world of difference.

I’m touching on the Hans character for just a minute. I realize not everyone may have a Hans, but we’ve had a few. People who come into your life and pretend to be things they aren’t and then take full advantage of the fact that someone has issues that make them vulnerable. With holes in their memories and a desire to make sense of things after pushing their loved ones away I find those with PTSD/TBI becomes easily manipulated by those with devious intentions. To the Hanses of the world shame on you!

In the end everyone ends up where they’re supposed to be and love wins out. Unfortunately that’s not the case for most who struggle with PTSD/TBI. But the little girl in me likes to hope for a happily ever after and an opening of the gates.

Made of Heart Monday April 28th – Artist Feature

We’re picking this up again with a little bonus. I’m using it as my weekly review for items I enjoy from small businesses I love. This week I’m giving a shout out to Nathalie Lynn Designs. Every one of her pieces is made with care and thought. They have a beautiful vintage charm to them and make them easy to wear day to day. Man I married has always teased that he has filled my jewelry box with expensive items, but I always wear the “cheap” stuff. It’s because these pieces are full of personality and easily fit with my jeans and favorite sweater or play well with a flirty sundress. Don’t get me wrong a girl loves diamonds and pearls, but they tend to be more special occasion pieces and chasing 4 boys doesn’t often lend itself to fancy attire.

My first piece was this sweet turquoise and button necklace. It perfectly coordinates with my favorite mint tank top and I get so many compliments on it. I love the burnished metal and that it’s cute without being a huge call to attention. It has the weight of a piece that comes with quality I don’t worry about it breaking, but it’s light enough I’m not constantly aware it’s there.

Button NecklaceI’m always a little hesitant with getting jewelry online as there are so many poorly made options and I want lasting pieces, but I was so happy with my necklace and Natalie is so sweet that when she released a sewing inspired charm bracelet I had to have that too.

I can’t wait for it to arrive! The little girl in me is squealing with delight, “It’s a charm bracelet! A jingly charm bracelet!” Look at the little sewing machines aren’t they prefect?

You can keep track off what’s happening at Nathalie Lynn Designs on Facebook and of course find lovely items in her shop on Etsy.

Like this camera necklace that’s perfect for the photographer in your life:

Or this butterfly watch necklace:

Crochet Dolly Shoes

You might remember from my last post I’ve been on a bit of a crochet kick. As I’m making a decided shift to just toys and plushies I decided doll clothes and accessories had a place in my shop. The lovely Michelle at Turtle Keeper Designs has cute patterns available and grants permission to sell from them, so rather than reinvent the wheel I decided to support another small business and pick up a few of her patterns. If you’re on Ravelry you can find her patterns here.

100_8763

I love how quickly they work up while I enjoy a favorite show or just relax in the evenings. I also get to use up the little balls of yarn left from bigger projects so that’s a plus, but now that I’m in the groove I’m eyeing all the pretty rainbow skeins just dying to join my stash and become little dolly accessories.

I modified the boot pattern to whip up these little mary janes in one of my favorite custom colorways.

starry night MJ3

My models are loving them and keep asking to have them in their wardrobes. See, isn’t Gwendolyn Rose the cutest? And her piggies are warm too.

I just love the little wooden beads on this Cherry colored pair worn by August Denali.

There are listings available in my Etsy shop right now and I’ll continue to add them. I am always happy to take custom requests as well.

It’s a Little Ood…

You may recall from previous posts, like our bleach stenciling tut, that we are Doctor Who fans. Midkid has been begging for his very own Ood for quite a long time. Oods are a kind natured species that carries their brains in their hands. It prompts non-violence and makes them incredibly trusting. I seem to have the same problems.

As I’ve begun to limit my customs and do more ready to go items, it’s freed up a little time to do more projects for myself and my kids which was pretty high on my list for this year. I’ve been enjoying crocheting more these days. It’s one of the first crafts I learned in my teens, but had dropped it as my other interests increased, but I love that it’s a pretty quick craft, leads to instant gratification, and is portable. I save my crochet projects for speech therapy days.

ood

Thanks to Ravelry I found a perfect little Amigurumi pattern to use. I worked him up in Red Heart Super Saver acrylic, not my favorite yarn by any means. Actually, I loathe it, but we had the colors we needed and another goal for me this year was using more on hand materials. It called for an H hook, but I didn’t have one on hand and used my G. The stitches weren’t as tight, but he turned out ok. I’ll admit I was pretty confused when joining the two legs to start the body piece. It says to stitch around 15st on each leg, but you ended them with 18, so I totally stitched 3 from each leg together to form the crotch then did my 30 total stitches around the legs to start the body. Whatever works!

Midkid is thrilled. He kinda sat and hounded until his new friend was finished. I had kind thought of saving him for the Easter basket, but watching him love him now has been worth it. I’m winning all sorts of mom points this weekend. Bean needed new shoes and while I generally stick to Pedipeds or similar we happened to have a Wal-mart gift card. Thank you awesome grandparents! So I let him pick out a pair to his own liking. It was kind of a big deal since his “new” shoes have always pretty much been hand me downs. He dances around singing about his batman shoes, stomped through the zoo yesterday setting off the lights and has insisted on wearing them since he tried them on.

*Disclaimer – I made the Ood for personal use for my kidlet. I do not recommend using this pattern for profit. BBC owns the rights to Doctor Who and it’s characters and items made for profit based on their characters requires permission.

Happy Lent

I’m Baptist, we don’t generally participate in Lent. During the weeks leading up to Easter we focus on the scriptures and the sacrifice made for us. But I found a special pull on my heart this year to consider the meaning behind Lent and why we are called to fast as Jesus did. I know people give up chocolate, or red meat, or internet or any number of things that they can live without for 40 days then they pick up where they left off and I think the message behind it is lost. If I’m making a sacrifice for 40 days I want it to be something that will stick with me and impact my life.

This year I aim to remove the negativity in my life. I find more and more I’m surrounded by situations and conversations that are just draining and then I look at my life and I forget to take in the blessings and all too often get weighed down by focusing on the things that don’t make me happy. Which let’s be honest is a fairly crummy way to go through life when you have great friends, wonderful family, a growing business and things to look forward to.

So my challenge is to spend the next 40 days removing my negativity and I challenge you to play along whether you’re religious or not. I pulled out my journal and will be noting each day things that I am grateful for and that make me happy and appreciative. This isn’t saying I’ll never feel down or frustrated, but when I do I can pull out my book look at the good the things and be inspired to jot down a few new things.

Here’s to happy thinking!

Made of Heart Monday Week 3

We survived another week, despite getting hit with the sickies and the delays that tend to come with tending to illness, but I think we’re on our way to breathing clearly again. Just in time for a new week of our handmade link up.

The most clicked item from week 2 of Made of Heart link up was from Nature Junkie. Seems these green chevron unsponges were an eye catcher. I think her products generally sell themselves they’re so amazing. How can you beat practical and cute?

By staff I mean me and the kidlets, it’s a group effort. Turkey decided this owl hat was something he needed. Consider it noted my child. It’s bright and cheery and sure to make you think warm thoughts. As cold as it’s been we can all use some warm thoughts. You can find your own owl hat and other cute items at Trini’s Crochet.

Rainbow Owl Beanie

I personally had a hard time choosing between this chainmaille bracelet or the unicorn magnet.

But as it works out you can find both these items at Cherished.

Made of Heart Monday – Week 2

I got all excited about more blogging and business building and then my modem blew up. Any idea how hard it is to do cyber things from a dying ancient phone and no real internet access? Now that we’re live again we can get busy with it, but that means that our second week of our Made of Heart link up is more than a week from the first one. You forgive me right? Thank you to everyone who participated! In addition to participating in our handmade link ups you can join us on Pinterest where I’ve created a board for promoting small crafters.

The most clicked item from week 1 of Made of Heart Monday was this sweet piece from Bugaboo Bear Designs.

Long Distance Love State Wall Art, personalized, couples gift, chalkboard art, My Love will Find You Wherever you are,

It reminded me of long deployments and the frequent separations of military life; knowing that no matter the distance love spans space and time. I loved it so much I was inspired to create this treasury on Etsy:

'One Who Waits' by sbuccellato

Nothing harder than a deployment, nothing greater than that next first kiss, nowhere too far that love can't reach. To all the families serving a few items of comfort and pride.
